Harris Teeter plans DC store
WASHINGTON, D.C.--With two new store openings under its belt this month, Harris Teeter has set its sights on a new location in an urban neighborhood here.

During the winter of 2010/2011, the upscale supermarket operator will open a 50,000-square-foot store at Constitution Square north of Massachusetts Avenue here--its first in the area.

Construction is expected to begin in April, according to a March 21 prepared statement released by Bethesda, Md.-based developers StonebridgeCarras.

The first construction phase of Constitution Square will total 1.6 million square feet and includes the Harris Teeter Store, the Department of Justice, a residential building with 440 apartments and 30,000 square feet of additional retail space.

With 170 stores in North Carolina, South Carolina, Virginia, Georgia, Tennessee and Florida, the grocery store operator has been eyeing the NoMa neighborhood for the past several years. "We found that Constitution Square's mixed-use plan provides the type of urban location where we can provide an outstanding grocery store and become an integral member of this emerging commercial and residential community," said Fred Morganthall, president of Harris Teeter, in a statement.

Upscale grocery departments include Harris Teeter's Fresh Foods Market, filled with prepared foods, bakery items, and deli selections; Fisherman's Market, with natural and organic meat selections; and Farmer's Market, which provides conventional and organic fruits and vegetables.

NoMa is an emerging mixed-use neighborhood that's piqued the interest of private developers who have invested approximately $1.5 billion to date with plans to develop more than 20 million square feet of office, residential, hotel, and retail space in the area during the next 10 years.

In other news, Harris Teeter opened a new store in Cary, N.C., March 12 and another location in Virginia Beach, Va., March 17.
