NEW YORK--Online food purveyor FreshDirect and City Harvest, a food rescue organization, have joined forces to launch a buying club for residents of the Melrose neighborhood in South Bronx here. FreshDirect is expected to make its first drop off in April.
The partnership was announced Feb. 19 and aims to reach low-income residents who cannot otherwise afford fresh and healthy food, according to a Fresh Direct statement. Melrose was chosen to be the pilot location for the buying club based on its lack of healthy eating options.

As part of the partnership, FreshDirect will offer City Harvest a 20 percent discount on groceries that will be sold to residents and local institutions such as day care providers and senior centers. FreshDirect will waive all delivery fees and will provide pickups at local drop-off points.
According to the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, unhealthy food outlets outnumber healthy ones by 5 to 1 in Melrose. The neighborhood is part of the poorest congressional district in the country and has among the highest rates of nutrition-related diseases in the city, including diabetes and obesity.
Based on the success of this project FreshDirect and City Harvest plan to bring this model to other low-income communities here in the future.
