ORLANDO, Fla.--Long ago packaging was just a means of housing a product until people bought it. Today packaging serves that core purpose, but environmentally conscious consumers are also holding companies accountable for the packaging waste they produce.
To help retailers and suppliers learn about packaging and its environmental impact, IntertechPira held its second sustainable packaging conference March 11 to 13 at the Royal Plaza Hotel here.

Last year 150 people from kitchenware retailer Williams-Sonoma, supermarket chain HEB Grocery Co. and Flowers Foods, a Thomasville, Ga., producer and marketer of packaged bakery foods, attended the conference, said Olga Adamovich, who is producing the conference for IntertechPira, a global company with offices in Portland, Maine.
"A lot of the presentations were focused on defining sustainability, what it means to a company, how it should be implemented and what goals should be set," Adamovich said.
This year the emphasis is on how to make sustainability happen in the workplace. "At this point, sustainability as an issue in the corporate world has been around. Most companies have defined their goals. We wanted to move to the next goal of putting owners and employees in a position to make sustainability happen."
Speakers included organic retailer Whole Foods Market, natural personal care company Burt's Bees, the Environmental Protection Agency, National Recycling Coalitions, a national non-profit advocacy group for waste reduction, reuse and recycling, and package companies like Amcor.
Green design and reducing a company's carbon footprints were discussed. This is paramount to companies, Adamovich said. For more information on the conference, go to www.sustainability-in-packaging.com
