Target expands food offerings in new stores |

MINNEAPOLIS-Discount retailer Target, based here, opened 23 new stores-including 17 stores with expanded food departments-on July 26.
In total four general merchandise stores, 17 general merchandise with expanded food options and two full-grocery SuperTarget stores opened their doors.

 The 17 expanded food format stores are located in California, Connecticut, Florida, Iowa, Louisiana, Nevada, New Hampshire, New York, Pennsylvania, Texas, Virginia, West Virginia and Wisconsin. The expanded food stores offer all of the merchandise found in the general stores with added fresh foods. The new format has an open-market layout and features basic fresh produce, meat and bakery goods and is approximately 135,000 square feet.
General merchandise stores feature an assortment of food and average 127,000 square feet.
The company opened two SuperTargets as well, one in California and one in Texas. SuperTargets combine the general merchandise concept with a full-scale grocery including fresh produce and an on-site bakery and deli. Each SuperTarget is approximately 186,000 square feet.
Target has 1,719 stores in 49 states and hired 4,000 people at the 23 stores.
