CULVER CITY, Calif.-Sprouts Farmers Markets recently opened its 51st store and was awarded the Environmental Protection Agency's GreenChill gold certification.
The award was presented to store personnel during the store's grand opening on June 23. The company currently has plans to open a total of 12 additional stores this year.

The 32,800-square-foot store that opened here in June features high-performance heating, ventilation, air-conditioning and refrigeration solutions that meet the company's sustainability objectives. Sprouts leaders anticipate that the selected solutions from Hussman and Trane, a provider of HVAC solutions, will use about 50 percent less refrigerant than the industry average, providing the company with up-front and long-term savings.
This award represents Sprouts' fifth GreenChill award since becoming a new partner member with the EPA GreenChill program last year.
New partners in the program pledge to exceed regulatory requirements by measuring and tracking refrigerant emissions. They then set reduction targets for these emissions. Partners also agree to use only ozone-friendly alternatives in all new and remodeled stores.
The store is also slated to be the chain's first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED)-certified store later this year.
"Choosing these energy efficient systems reflects our commitment to being an environmentally responsible business within the community," said Doug Sanders, President and CEO of Sprouts, in a prepared statement.
Based on this commitment, the store's management also received the first ever Energy Efficiency Leader in Retail Grocery Award from Hussman and Trane. The award recognizes the importance of these choices and the owners' commitment to improving the shopping and working environment while increasing energy efficiency and environmental responsibility. It was presented to Frank Davis, Energy and Refrigeration Manager for Sprouts, on July 22.
"Sprouts is honored to be the first to receive this award," said Jerry Stutler, Vice President of Construction and Facility Engineering for Sprouts, in a prepared statement. "We selected this project to be our first LEED-certified building, and it has proven truly energy-efficient in its design. This award and our EPA award bear this out."
