Whole Foods in talks to buy six stores in Massachusetts
Whole Foods Market is in talks to buy or take over leases for six eastern Massachusetts locations of family-owned Johnnie's Foodmaster, according to a report in the Boston Globe. http://bo.st/S0j2VV

"If the deal goes through, Whole Foods will increase its presence in Massachusetts by nearly 30 percent at a time when rivals like Market Basket and Wegmans Food Markets are stepping up expansion efforts," the report continues. Whole Foods currently has 21 Massachusetts stores, with another two planned.

The negotiations can be interpreted as a move to protect market share from Wegmans, which entered New England in a big way last year with a 140,000-square-foot store in Northborough, central Massachusetts, and has announced plans for two more locations.
