Milk chocolate preferred by U.S. consumers - Mintel
Research firm Mintel has released a package of special Valentine's Day statistics.

- In 2012, Americans splashed $4.5 billion on seasonal chocolate. Half (50 percent) of chocolate eaters buy the product for holidays or as a gift item.

- Milk chocolate is preferred by 57 percent of chocolate consumers in the US, with dark (33 percent) and white (10 percent) chocolate coming in a distant second and third.

- The preference also is age-specific. Milk chocolate is preferred by 67 percent of consumers aged 25-34, compared to 50 percent of those aged 55-64.
