Harris Teeter approached for sale, retains J. P. Morgan Securities
North Carolina-based grocer Harris Teeter will not comment on reports that it is up for sale, but confirms that it has been approached by two private equity firms and has retained J. P. Morgan Securities for assistance in conducting discussions.

"There can be no assurance that these discussions will result in any transaction. If a transaction were entered into, there can be no assurance as to the price, timing or other terms of such transaction. The Company does not plan to provide any additional information until such discussions are concluded," the statement continued.

The publicly traded company operates in eight states, primarily in the southeastern and mid-Atlantic, and the District of Columbia.
