Online sites reel in more holiday sales
ROCHESTER, N.Y.--Online holiday sales topped $30.1 billion for thein 2005, a 30 percent increase over the 2004 season, according to the fifth annual holiday espending report by Harris Interactive, here, as well as Goldman Sachs and Nielsen/NetRatings.

Each year holiday shoppers are spending more and more online. 2004 holiday season sales rang in at $23.2 billion, excluding travel, according to the report released Dec. 29. About 8,600 shoppers in the United States were surveyed.

Online spending made up 27 percent of total spending during the holidays, up from 16 percent four years ago.

Brick-and-mortar shops attracted 68 percent of holiday spending this year, down from 72 percent last year, the report stated.

The most popular category was clothing, with $5 billion in sales. Other top categories includded computers, consumer electronics, games, books, music and DVDs and gift cards.
