WASHINGTON--A growing number of retailers are buying green power to reduce the environmental impacts associated with the electricity that powers their facilities. At the top of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency's list of Top 10 Retail Partners is Austin, Texas-based Whole Foods Market, which offsets 100 percent of its energy with green power.
Green power products purchased by the specialty grocer use several forms of renewable energy including wind, solar, geothermal and small hydro, according to the EPA's Web site. Almost 50 percent of Whole Foods Market's total green power purchases come from wind power. The grocer also has solar panels to generate renewable-based electricity at five stores in California and New Jersey, and last year opened a distribution center in Connecticut that has the largest solar roof in the state, according to the grocer's Web site.
