"Besides being your local produce stand, butcher shop, fish market and florist, we are combining the concept of a healthy, organic eatery and supermarket at our new flagship store in Pasadena," said Marci Frumkin, regional marketing director, in a company statement. "We have sit-down dining venues and a Wine and Tapas Lounge. It's a whole new way to look at the grocery shopping experience."

Its Wine and Tapas Lounge offers Belgian beers and wines from around the world along with cheeses, charcuterie, olives and nuts. Its 6,000-square-foot produce department features more than 500 items daily and offers a "Veggie Grill" program that features a daily rotation of fresh vegetables ready to be grilled to order by an in-house chef. Its Italian Trattoria features panini, pizza, calzones, stromboli and lasagna.

Its seafood department offers a "Custom Catch" program where shoppers can customize their fish with marinades and seasonings and have it cooked to order. A seafood bar with cooked selections is also featured.

For dessert, the store's chocolate island featuring more than 50 chocolate varieties as well as white and dark chocolate fountains may tempt customers. Non-food items are also part of the mix, including more than 20,000 natural health and beauty care products and a massage room.

Offering more than 1,200 domestic and imported wine selections, the wine department has an enomatic wine machine that meters out samples, so shoppers can taste various selections before they buy. In related news, Wine Enthusiast Magazine awarded Whole Foods with the "Best Wine Retailer of the Year" Wine Star Award Nov. 5. It is the first supermarket to win the annual award that recognizes excellence in the wine and spirits industry.
