Safeway fuels its trucks with biodiesel
PLEASANTON, Calif.—Adding to its energy-saving initiatives, grocery store operator Safeway Inc. converted its entire fleet of trucks to biodiesel fuel this month.

With its fleet consisting of more than 1,000 trucks, using biodiesel will reduce carbon dioxide emissions by 75 million pounds annually, the equivalent of taking nearly 7.500 vehicles off the road each year, according to a Jan. 18 company statement.

"Safeway is proud to lead by example to help protect the environment," said Chairman, President and CEO Steve Burd, in a statement. "…Our biodiesel program is just one of many initiatives underway that will make a positive impact on the environment."

Safeway's biodiesel program is part of its Greenhouse Gas Reduction Initiative and the company's overall effort to manage its carbon footprint, address climate change and reduce air pollution.

In 2006, Safeway joined the Chicago Climate Exchange, a voluntary, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, registry and trading program. The membership commits Safeway to reduce its carbon footprint from the base year 2000 by 390,000 tons of carbon dioxide. Safeway also participates

Safeway purchased renewable wind energy to power more than 50 stores and 300 fuel stations in 2005. It launched a solar power program to convert 24 California stores to solar energy last year and has implemented energy saving strategies such as the use of LED light bulbs and energy-efficient refrigeration systems in its stores nationwide.

Safeway, based here, operates 1,738 stores in the United States and Canada.
