Organic, local foods grow co-op sales to nearly $1 billion |

IOWA CITY, Iowa--Representing 109 grocery co-ops nationwide, the National Cooperative Grocers Association reported its member stores collectively earned more than $945 million in sales last year--placing co-ops among the top three sellers of natural, organic and local foods, according to a prepared statement.
"As demand for natural and organic food continues to grow among consumers, we think it's phenomenal that one of the nation's original providers of organics--the neighborhood co-op-- is part of a collective that's grossing nearly $1 billion in sales," said Robynn Shrader, chief executive officer for NCGA, in the statement. "This growth comes in large part because co-op members and customers realize and appreciate the social, economic and healthful benefits of the co-op model.

NCGA has set a goal to help its member stores achieve $3 billion in combined sales by 2020. The NCGA is a cooperative for consumer-owned food co-ops throughout the United States. Founded in 1999 its co-op members operate more than 130 stores in 32 states.
