Giant Food, Loop Offer Reusable Packaging in D.C. Stores

Giant Food shoppers can purchase a selection of products in reusable packaging, thanks to a new partnership between the leading Washington, D.C., grocer and Loop, the circular reuse platform developed by TerraCycle. Customers can walk into any of the 10 participating Giant supermarkets and purchase more than 20 products from leading consumer brands, all packaged in reusable containers instead of single-use packaging.

“Giant is proud to be the first grocery retailer on the East Coast to launch a partnership with Loop, a global leader in eliminating waste, and offer our customers a program that allows them to shop for products while helping our environment,” said Diane Couchman, vice president category management, non-perishables at Giant Food. “We look forward to expanding our Loop item offerings and launching in more Giant locations in the near future.”

An assortment of products in reusable Loop containers from well-known brands including Kraft-Heinz, Nature’s Path and Stubb’s BBQ Sauce will be found in branded displays at participating Giant stores. When finished with a product, the empty packaging is returned to a Loop Return Point at any of the participating stores. From there, the containers are sent to Loop to be sanitized, then returned to the CPG suppliers to be refilled and returned to the store for future purchase. Customers are charged a small packaging deposit at checkout, and a full refund is given once the container is returned.

“Loop’s goal has always been to make reusable packaging as convenient for consumers as disposable packaging,” says Tom Szaky, founder and CEO of TerraCycle and Loop. “With Giant as the newest retailer bringing Loop to consumers, we are giving them what they’ve been asking for since Loop was introduced in 2019 – the ability to forgo single-use packaging and purchase the products they use every day in durable, reusable containers.”

To maintain advanced sanitization standards for all reusable containers, Loop consults with Ecolab Inc. — a global leader in cleaning and hygiene solutions — to identify proper equipment and design on-site cleaning procedures.

Newport Craft, Radiant Pig Team Up for It’s Called Soccer Beer

In celebration of the 2022 edition of the World Cup, Newport Craft Brewing & Distilling Co. and Radiant Pig Beer Company have collaborated for It’s Called Soccer, a limited-run Kölsch.  Brewed with Hallertau Blanc Hops, It’s Called Soccer is light-bodied with pleasant citrus and floral notes.  With a can design inspired by the USMNT’s return to the international championship, It’s Called Soccer is a perfect, smooth beer to enjoy the matches.

“We wanted to make a beer that not only embraces the international spirit of the World Cup, but also to support the U.S. Men’s National Team on its journey this November,” said Newport Craft’s head of production, Scott Douglas.  “The resulting beer is a light and crisp Kölsch labeled with the stars and stripes to let our boys know that we’ll be cheering them on in Qatar.”

As the world gathers to collectively celebrate its passion for football, let’s do it with It’s Called Soccer Kölsch and proudly show our support for Team USA.

Newport Craft will release It’s Called Soccer beginning at the end of October through the conclusion of the tournament in mid-December.  The limited run Kölsch can be found where Newport Craft and Radiant Pig are sold in the Massachusetts, New Jersey, New York and Rhode Island markets.

Founded in 1999, Newport Craft Brewing & Distilling Co. is headquartered in Newport, R.I., and distributes its portfolio of craft beers and spirits throughout the United States.

Since 2017, Newport Craft has solidified the company’s spot as a leader on the New England craft brewing and distilling stage by introducing new products and product lines, upgrading and expanding its manufacturing facility, and pursuing strategic acquisitions.  The company brews beers of many styles, including its flagship creations Rhode Trip IPA and Save the Robots East Coast IPA, and experimental, limited run batches of various styles.  Newport Craft, together with its affiliated brands, is the largest combined brewing and distilling company (“Brewstillery”) in Rhode Island by production.

Newport Craft has engaged Parker Construction Company of East Providence, R.I., to bring an estimated $17 million renovation and expansion project of its Newport facility to life.  The project will triple Newport Craft’s manufacturing footprint, create separate brewing and distilling production areas, open a new tasting room and provide private function event space.  The expansion will maximize the Company’s output by increasing annual production to 100,000 BBL and facilitate the storage of 5,000 barrels of aging spirits.  Newport Craft anticipates construction to be completed by the end of 2023.
