Walter Robb to Keynote Specialty Food Association 2018 Leadership Awards

Walter Robb will keynote the Specialty Food Association’s 2018 Leadership Awards, which honor food industry entrepreneurs in the categories of business leadership, citizenship, and vision. The choice of Robb as the keynote speaker is intended to be represent a celebration of positive social, economic and environmental impact.

With a long and varied entrepreneurial history in natural foods ranging from retailer to farmer to consultant, Robb joined Whole Foods Market in 1991. In 2010, he was named co-CEO along with John Mackey and joined the Whole Foods Market board of directors. In 2017, Robb transitioned his leadership focus to his role as Chairman of the Board for Whole Kids Foundation and Whole Cities Foundation. Robb also serves on the board of directors for Union Square Hospitality Group, The Container Store, FoodMaven and HeatGenie.

“The SFA Leadership Awards honor people who do social good through their businesses,” said Phil Kafarakis, President of the Specialty Food Association. “Through his leadership at Whole Foods Market and in his newest ventures, Robb exemplifies the goodness of the specialty food industry.”

The awards will be presented during the SFA’s Winter Fancy Food Show in San Francisco at a special ceremony on Sunday, January 21 from 5:00-6:30 p.m. A reception sponsored by the Association’s Natural & Organic Council will follow the awards ceremony.

Kalustyan Corporation Acquires CrossRoads Spice & Seasonings

Errol Karakash, Owner and CEO of Kalustyan Corporation, has acquired CrossRoads Spice & Seasonings and will be transitioning it under the global umbrella of Kalustyan Corporation.


Kalustyan Corporation, a global manufacturer of industrial herbs and spices, is assuming ownership of CrossRoads, which will now be known as CrossRoads Blends, LLC. The decision was made based on many factors, including the food industry shifting from a commodity mindset to a finished ingredient requirement. This acquisition is a valued addition to Kalustyan’s global manufacturing, and will allow the company to further service its global and multi-national partners, according to Kalustyan.

CrossRoads Blends, LLC is located in New Jersey.

Primizie Snacks Announces Two New Flatbread Flavors

As flatbreads continue to gain popularity, nearly doubling in sales from 2014 to 2016, according to Nielsen, Primizie Snacks has added two new flavors to its flatbread crisps lineup. In addition, the company has refreshed its snack packaging allowing consumers to more readily identify its flatbread products.

“The growing popularity of flatbreads has them appearing in most casual and many white table cloth restaurants creating an immediate and consistent consumer visibility and awareness,” said Primizie Snacks CEO Shawn Sweeney. “Since our launch, we’ve been a flatbread company first and foremost and now, we’ve refreshed our packaging to more clearly convey that to our consumers…. Flatbreads create a positive interruption in the space as an innovative point of differentiation from other items in the snack category.”

The new packaging also clearly displays the non-GMO logo, a message that the company feels strongly about conveying to health-conscious Millennials and the like. Most of the company’s flatbread crisp options are non-GMO.

In addition to developing a stronger visual representation of Primizie Flatbread Crisps, the company has added two brand new flavors to its taste-packed line of flatbread crisps, Rustic Beet and Green Harvest Flatbread Crisps, which incorporate a base of the already popular Ancient Grains flavor with kale, broccoli and spinach, making for a guilt-free flatbread.

Primizie Snacks’ Flatbread Crisps offerings also include original flavors Ancient Sprouted Grains, Italian Everything, Gouda Garlic, Simply Salted, Chile Lime, and more. These products, as well as the two new flavors, are available at various locations of Safeway/Albertson’s, HEB, Tops, Winn Dixie, Sprouts, Publix, Central Market, Raley’s, Kroger and more.
